Details

Bukit Kutu is a well-known hiking destination located near Kuala Kubu Bharu in Selangor, Malaysia. Despite its name meaning “Hill of Lost Money,” Bukit Kutu is actually a mountain standing at about 1,053 metres above sea level. It is a popular day hike among local hikers due to its manageable distance, historical ruins at the summit, and rewarding panoramic views. The trail begins near the town of Kuala Kubu Bharu and initially follows an old jeep track that gradually ascends through forested terrain. The early section of the hike is relatively straightforward, but it becomes progressively steeper and more challenging as hikers move deeper into the jungle trail. A notable feature of Bukit Kutu is the abandoned colonial-era rest house at the summit area. These ruins add a unique historical element to the hike, giving hikers a glimpse into Malaysia’s colonial past. From the upper sections, hikers are rewarded with scenic views of surrounding mountain ranges, including clear views of Gunung Nuang and nearby forested landscapes on clear days. Although Bukit Kutu is shorter compared to longer endurance hikes like Gunung Nuang, it still requires a good level of fitness due to its steady elevation gain and humid jungle conditions. The trail can become slippery after rain, and leeches may be present in wet conditions. Overall, Bukit Kutu is a rewarding hike that combines physical challenge, historical interest, and scenic viewpoints, making it a favourite among hikers looking for a shorter but satisfying mountain adventure in Selangor.
