Details

Gunung Datuk is one of the most popular hiking peaks in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, known for its relatively short but steep climb and iconic summit boulder with panoramic views. Standing at about 884 metres above sea level, it is a favourite weekend hike for both beginners looking to challenge themselves and experienced hikers seeking a quick summit experience. The trail begins at the base in Rembau and quickly enters a dense tropical rainforest. The early sections involve a steady ascent through well-marked jungle paths, with occasional rest points. As hikers progress, the trail becomes steeper and more physically demanding, with long stretches of climbing roots and rocky terrain. One of the most famous features of Gunung Datuk is the massive granite boulder at the summit. Hikers must climb a fixed iron ladder to reach the top of the rock, where they are rewarded with a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. On clear days, it is possible to see distant mountain ranges, plantations, and even glimpses of the Straits of Malacca. Despite its shorter distance compared to other major hikes like Gunung Nuang, Gunung Datuk is considered quite intense due to its steep gradient and humid conditions. The climb can feel strenuous, especially in hot weather, but the relatively short duration makes it a popular “quick summit” hike. Overall, Gunung Datuk offers a satisfying combination of challenge, accessibility, and rewarding views, making it one of the most iconic hiking destinations in southern Peninsular Malaysia.
